Brooke Smith (born May 22, 1967) is an American actress, photographer, and author with a career spanning over three decades. She first gained widespread attention for her unforgettable portrayal of Catherine Martin — the tenacious captive of Buffalo Bill — in Jonathan Demme's Academy Award–winning The Silence of the Lambs (1991). She went on to earn critical acclaim as Dr. Erica Hahn on ABC's Grey's Anatomy, as Sheriff Jane Greene on A&E's Bates Motel, and in Louis Malle's Vanya on 42nd Street (1994). A New York native, Brooke trained at the High School of Performing Arts and studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. Beyond acting, she is also a published author and accomplished photographer.
